Rodrigo Tona, the leader of an innovative company
Graduated from North Carolina State University, Rodrigo Tona is an industrial engineer from this institution, and has an MBA. Since he took over management of Ternova in 2010, he has strived to transform it into a sustainable and innovative company. Likewise, he has dedicated his work to “ pursuing a sustainable future, through the circular economy, innovation strategies related to adaptive and disruptive ventures.”

Tona's vision has led him to be considered a reference in terms of sustainability issues in his country, as well as to be recognized internationally. “My work has been to understand that sustainability is not an option: either we transform or we will die,” says Tona.
From packing to Ternova
Termoencogibles, today Ternova, was born in a simple way, as Rodrigo Tona comments in an interview.
Our group was born from a very humble enterprise of three brothers who inherited a machine [...] and who began to play with a new material called polyethylene and began to make a tube.

Tona and her brothers, using a blade placed in the fire, began to cut the tube to turn it into a bag. Which caused them to venture to use it in henequen fertilizer bags, creating flexible packaging and establishing a niche in the industry.
We were born as a business by coincidence to start making a hand bag or industrial liner by hand.

Since that moment, the venture has become a company, which today—as the CEO describes it—has refocused, and is establishing itself as a major corporate player in regional growth. It currently operates in seven countries, has 2,000 employees and has six manufacturing plants, one in Vietnam, a distribution center in the Dominican Republic and commercial offices in Mexico and the United States.
Conscious entrepreneurs and reinvention
For Tona, the family values with which the business began were responsible for Ternova looking at the responsibility that its activities had, in addition to always having features of environmental, social and economic sustainability. This led them to reinvent the core of their business, packing .
And they went from a traditional model - in which the most important thing was the creation of value and the expansion of the company - to one that helped them change their future planning. For this reason, they redefined their value proposition, which went from offering an industrial solution (selling packaging) to understanding that Ternova is the intermediary in the interaction of the final consumer with the products.
