I am increasingly convinced that if in this world we were all volunteers, society would be different. It's funny that when people ask me what I do and I tell them the answer is always: “Wow! I would love to do that.” Well let me give you the good news that you don't need to work in Social Responsibility, UN Volunteers or a civil society organization to get on board. I'll tell you a little about how I started and how you can start in your company, community, with neighbors, CSOs or yourself. As the word says, all you need is will. I started volunteering with the missions of the Universidad Anáhuac eleven years ago, going through those of the Universidad Iberoamericana, un Techo Para mi País and I even achieved my greatest dream, which was to volunteer in Africa. I got to know different states of my Mexico, as well as Kenya. Being a volunteer is also being a traveler with a cause. It's amazing and it's cheap. Focusing on Aeroméxico, we realized that people like to participate in volunteering, the only thing they need is a catalyst that encourages them to then start flying alone. We have learned that: 1) Everyone is motivated by a different cause, therefore, you must volunteer in different areas: environmental, children, women, housing construction, etc. You must always maintain order and review who you work with, their scope, that they have everything in order and that they are very clear about what their impact is and how they measure it. 2) Volunteer small and large.
The little ones become like a gathering between Finland Mobile Number List collaborators where you share things that you wouldn't do in the office, plus you allow family and friends to participate. The big ones become a big challenge for the organization, but your reach will be greater and you will be able to inspire more to join. 3) It serves as team building. In volunteering what I call "circles of solidarity" are created that are never broken. They are ties that are useful not only to help someone carry a bucket of cement, they also work when in the office you need hands, a question is clarified or you need to unblock something, surely a volunteer you met will help you. Creating a culture of volunteering in your company will always bring good news, quality of life, a better work environment, cultural exchange, reputation (Note: it should NEVER be your main reason), among others. The Social Responsibility area is the catalyst of the program, but the goal is to make employees exemplary citizens who look out for others, no matter if they are in the office, at home, on the street or simply for no reason. *Adriana Prieto Gaspar de Alba is an Internationalist and completed master's studies in Administration and Social Entrepreneurship. She is currently Social Responsibility Manager at Aeroméxico and a member of the Mexican Volunteer Alliance.
Editor's note: Based on this collaboration, the Mexican Volunteer Alliance wishes to promote and share the actions that different civil society organizations carry out in favor of achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. For this reason, in the sections “Citizens at work” and “Upcoming events”, the SDG to which it refers will be placed before the content of the note.
